How Often Should You Clean a Pool Filter in Arizona?

In the East Valley the honest answer is more often than the manual says. Dust, monsoon debris and 100-degree water load a filter faster than anywhere the manufacturer tested it. Use the pressure gauge, not the calendar.

The pressure rule

Note the gauge reading right after a cleaning. When it climbs 8 to 10 psi above that number, clean the filter. In Queen Creek and San Tan Valley, with their dust, that is often every three to four months on a cartridge; in central Gilbert or Chandler, four to six.

By filter type

  • Cartridge: hose off every three to four months, replace the cartridge every two to three years. Pleats that stay grey after a wash are done.
  • DE (diatomaceous earth): backwash when pressure rises, full teardown and grid clean twice a year.
  • Sand: backwash when pressure rises, replace the sand every five to seven years. Channeling and short filter runs mean it is time.

Signs you waited too long

Low flow from the returns, a pool that will not hold chlorine, cloudy water the day after a visit, and a pump that sounds like it is working harder. All four show up in our photo reports.

What it costs

A filter cleaning with Tartan Pools is quoted by filter type and size. Weekly customers get the pressure checked on every visit so the cleaning happens when it is due, not after the water turns. See pricing and pool filter service in Queen Creek.
